Anorexia Not Fashion's Fault

Another article that deals with the fashion and modeling industries and the rising concern of problems connected to eating disorders.  This time supermodel Gisele Bundchen added fire to an already heated debate when she said families, not the fashion industry, were to blame for anorexic models.

Her comments attracted a swift response from eating disorder experts, who've dismissed the claim as outdated and ill informed and say there's no scientific evidence that families cause anorexia.  Bundchen was commenting after the recent death of anorexic model Ana Carolina Reston sparked an international fashion industry backlash, with moves to ban super-skinny models from the catwalk.  The young Brazilian had reached a weight of just 40 kilograms.

But Bundchen pointed the finger squarely at families when she said earlier this week, "I never suffered from anorexia because I had a very strong family base. "Parents are responsible, not the fashion industry.''

Spokespeople for an Eating Disorders Foundation described Bundchen’s comments as “a gross over simplification. The notion of families being blamed came out of very early family therapy work, but it's been rejected.”
